Choice Cancer Care Launches to Bring World Class Oncology Resources under One Name

Cancer specialists unite care under one umbrella for patients, expansion

In addition to the recommendations contained in the Alert, The Joint Commission urges health care organization to use accreditation standards to guide the use of diagnostic imaging. These standards are related to the accreditation manual chapters addressing Leadership, Human Resources and the Environment of Care.“There are exciting advances in the field of oncology treatment,” said Gregory A. Echt, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist. “But these new alternatives mean nothing if you can’t bring them to the patients in a convenient setting that makes sense as a viable option for their care. The goal of Choice Cancer Care is to give each patient an individualized treatment care plan that takes into account all options and works with the patient, his or her family, and their lifestyle to achieve the best result possible.”Over the past two decades, the U.S. population's total exposure to ionizing radiation has nearly doubled with the increased use of diagnostic imaging in hospitals, imaging centers, physician and dental offices. Any physician can order radiologic tests at any frequency with no knowledge of when the patient was last irradiated or how much radiation the patient received. Several recent studies have raised concerns about the risk of cancer from diagnostic imaging, especially in vulnerable populations such as children, young adults and pregnant women.Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, including more than 10,300 hospitals and home care organizations, and more than 6,500 other health care organizations that provide long term care, behavioral health care, laboratory and ambulatory care services. The Joint Commission also provides certification of more than 2,000 disease-specific care programs, primary stroke centers, and health care staffing services. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
