HOUSEHOLD energy costs have doubled in six years and the latest round of increases will add around pounds 200 extra to your bills each year.
The Heating Helpline has released 10 tips to help cut energy costs.8) Appliances left on 'standby' can waste up to pounds 100 of energy a year. Unplug to save money. 9) Turn your washing machine down to 40-30C and cut energy usage by 40%.6) Draught proofing doors, windows and attic entrances by sealing gaps saves energy; as do heavy, well-fitted curtains over windows and doors.2) Fitting a jacket to the boiler could save over pounds 50 a year. 3) Most people's thermostats are set higher than they need to be to keep comfortably warm. Set room thermostats to no more than 21C (70F).7) Heat rises so upgraded insulation in the roof space will reduce heat loss. 27cm of insulation could save you up to pounds 150 a year.4) Consider fitting a programmable thermostat that lets you choose the time you want your heating on and the temperature for all seven days of the week.5) Thermostatic radiator valves (costing pounds 8 each) let you control the temperature in each room to avoid wasting energy.1) The hot water cylinder thermostat should be set at 60C (140F). Any higher is a waste of energy, but any lower carries a risk of legionella.
10) When using the kettle only boil the amount of water you need.
